FOMO in Oaxaca City!
Dance performances, art shows, symphonies, parades, plays, concerts, rallies, bazaars, craft fairs, book fairs, food fairs, chocolate tastings, lectures and poetry readings! All day every day! One of the “hardest” things about living in Oaxaca City is choosing what to attend and what to skip. Our friend Lindsey from Zipolite described it perfectly: “It’s seriously the best city! So much to do and most of it free! There is just a feeling in the air. Progressive, artsy, genuine and historic all at the same time.” We couldn’t describe it better ourselves.
For the first two weeks we hauled our butts downtown (a 25 minute brisk walk) almost every day with at least 3 events lined up. “The play is at the same time as the dance performance. Which one do you want to do? Oh and there is a poetry reading just an hour beforehand. Wait look, a free concert at our favorite bar at 10pm too! I think we can make all three. We’ll just have to walk fast because the concert is on the other side of town!” Sometimes we just had to close our eyes and point to make a decision.
Scientific experts and teenagers everywhere call the phenomenon that we’re experiencing: FOMO, Fear of Missing Out. Yes, it is real! We thought the symptoms had passed when we hit 30, but in this amazing city, it is flaring right back up again, and with a vengeance!
And do you want to know what makes this city even more amazing? 90% of these events are free! Seriously! And as you all know, free sure does fit nicely within our budget! What’s more is it allows everyone to participate. One of the greatest things about Oaxaca City is not just that it has lots of wonderful events to celebrate it’s heritage, but that the very heritage it celebrates- the art, the music, the dance, the food- involves and is created by everyone in this unique and rich community.
